Levelled by a 1958 earthquake that left only the Lyucian ruins of Telmessos unscathed, this booming port has been transformed and regenerated. It’s a hub for gulet traffic, the signature yachts that ply Turkish waters. The waters here are a vivid ultramarine, as are the skies, and so it’s no surprise that this is a popular area for water sports and hiking as well as sailing.

Travel to the Turkish resort of Bodrum for a holiday and you’ll be one in a million. Don’t be put off by its popularity, however. A strict building code means there are plenty of whitewashed homes trimmed with blue windows to form the perfect backdrop to your travel snaps. The mausoleum here was considered one of the wonders of the ancient world until it was destroyed in an earthquake, its stones reused in the town’s castle which still stands.
